Instruments of Peace
In this challenging and fast-paced world of ours, our minds, bodies, and nervous systems are overstimulated on a daily basis. Through technology, stress and an abundant of environmental noise, it has become harder and harder for us to relax as a culture. Replacing the day-to-day noise with more pleasant sound energies can help calm and rejuvenate us. This is why the art of sound healing is becoming more of an accepted alternative to traditional methods of dealing with stress and disease. So what is sound healing and what are the instruments used?
What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is a method of producing vibrational frequencies that have a calming and meditative impact on our minds, bodies, and spirits. Sound healing has been practiced by ancient cultures around the world since the beginning of time. Modern day science has now validated the healing properties that certain sound frequencies have on your health. Sound healers use a variety of earth tone instruments including Didgeridoos, drums, gongs, harps, rain sticks, crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, wind chimes, and the human voice to perform sound healing treatments.
Peace through Sound – The Instruments
The Didgeridoo, also known to the aboriginal people of Australia as the Yidaki, dates back more than 40,000 years and is believed to be the oldest instrument that is still played today. The didgeridoo is used to channel the sound vibrations of the Earth, nature, and the cosmos. The deep resonance of the didgeridoo clears emotional and energetic stagnation and invokes meditation and mind-body healing.
Djembe or drums
Djembe is a West African instrument that was made of wood, rope and skin hide. It plays a great role in trying to induce trance or states of altered consciousness. It has a calming effect on the human spirit of stress and anxiety.
Throughout history, gongs are used as part of ritual and ceremonial practices. It is also used in yoga, meditation and as well as Chakra balancing. It is a powerful therapeutic instrument that facilitates to break up emotional, physiological and spiritual blockages, stress reduction, stimulation of the glandular system.
Harps are known throughout history for its angelic melodies. Nowadays, it is commonly used in modern sound healing therapies. What makes it therapeutic to the mind, body and spirit, is the soft and sweet melodies it produces.
It is believed to be made from bodies of dried cacti with objects such as small pebbles placed inside. It produces a sound similar to that of falling rain. It is used for inducing states of peace and calm.
Sometimes, it is also called Tibetan singing bowls because they are commonly found in Tibetan monasteries and temples for meditation practices. At present, it is used spiritual ceremonies, yoga, traditional meditation practice, and sound healing therapy. The sounds generated are used to renovate the normal vibratory frequencies of diseases and out-of-harmony parts of the body, mind and soul.
They are known as a tool in tuning different musical instruments. To promote well-being and harmony, it is now used in sound healing therapy to balance the human energy field.
Most of the time, they’re considered as ornaments hung on our homes. But, to maximize the flow of chi, wind chimes are essential tools used in Feng Shui. Wind Chimes can produce beautifully celestial sounds and timbres.

Autumn Equinox: A Season of Harvest
Throughout history, Fall Equinox has been regarded as the season of harvest; a time to collect that which was planted, nurtured and grown through the fertile spring and summer months. Bagua Center gathers once again to share the fruits of our learning with you through our practitioners at this spectacular event.
As the journey of the sun transitions into Libra (in the Northern Hemisphere), this day marks the tipping of the scales of day and night. Some cultures and translations interpret the mark of longer nights as shadows & darkness; however, we must honor the balance of light and dark, as the scale of Libra foretells.
Inner Transformation & Loving Your Shadows
During Bagua Center’s Autumn Equinox : Inner Transformation – we celebrate as one the obstacles we overcame, the new ways of thinking we adopted, our harvest. As the length of the nights grows, with our new, awakened state of being, we accept and welcome shadows as a part of the whole, learning love and embrace the shadows of ourselves that we too once deemed as dark. Let the contrast of the night brighten the light; let our shadows be used for self acceptance for every aspect of ourselves, let the true inner transformation be whole in sum of all its parts.
On September 22nd, 2016 we will be gathering at Casa de Bagua for this outdoor gathering. Come one and come all as we celebrate all that we have cultivated together; each practitioner in our lineup will share profound knowledge & healing, so that you may flow into the next phase of your journey with love & acceptance, with our love by your side. With each song, with each guided meditation, with each dance we delve deep into Inner Transformation, to root you deep into your heart for your next quest.
